This March will mark the 20th Anniversary of the Leonard Shearer March Madness Basketball Tournament. This outstanding tournament, hosted by Success 4 Kids and Families (S4KF) in partnership with Hillsborough County Public Schools, brings together over 400 special needs students in Hillsborough County to celebrate their achievements, academic success, hard work and determination. These students have maintained stellar attendance, excellent behavior, and strong academic success to be allowed to participate in this one day event.

This tournament is the perfect setting for these at-risk students to showcase their achievements.  In addition to the student athletes, all students, at the participating schools, can submit an original piece of artwork or essay supporting the theme.  As in years' past, the artwork will be featured on Success 4 Kids & Families webpage (S4KF.org).  Hundreds of pictures, dozens of art exhibits, and a video highlighting last year's tournament are available to view on the webpage.  Last year's tournament was a huge success. Ten Hillsborough County schools without intramural sports programs participated.

This year the tournament will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at the newly renovated Bob Martinez Sports Complex at the University of Tampa.  The students will be honored at a lunch banquet on Friday, March 8, 2013 at the historic Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City. The banquet will feature an awards ceremony where the students receive lunch, hear a motivational speech and are recognized for their accomplishments. The Honorable Judge Ralph Stoddard of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit is the keynote speaker for this year's luncheon.  Judge Stoddard is the 2012 recipient of the Abraham Lincoln Award, presented by the Tampa Bay Inn of Court, for promoting legal excellence, civility, professionalism, and ethics in the practice of law. Sandy Murman, Hillsborough County Commissioner (District 1) will also be presenting a proclamation from the county.  This year's tournament is sure to be an amazing event and an opportunity to shine the spotlight on these very deserving students.

This is Success 4 Kids and Families' signature event. Success 4 Kids and Families is a non-profit group dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families in need in the Hillsborough County area. The organization provides services for families with children who are having behavioral, emotional, or mental health issues. Success 4 Kids and Families was awarded the 2012 Tampa Bay Non-Profit of the Year, by the Tampa Bay Business Journal, for their outstanding work in the area of family services.
